You know what would be helpful? A complete list of what you already watched and what you liked/disliked. I just went to your MAL and its a joke. There is no way of telling, what sort of anime you want. And instead of ranting about an anime you didn't like, because you only look after ratings how about looking around what thematics etc. you are interested in and then looking for some anime in that direction.
Even if you like a particular genre and you are watching an anime with a high rating, this is no guarantee that you will like it too. There can be single elements (main character, animation, etc.) which will make it not possible for you to enjoy an anime. So at least look for summaries and ask for some details (closed storyline, open ending).
Yes this means you will have to invest some time for your entertainment, no mindless watching and letting others take the decision for you, what you will be watching. Sure high/low ratings are a nice indicator about the overall quality (or about the fans) of an anime, but everyone has a personal taste and opinion about such things.
Take a look around the "Recommendations" here in this forum, if you at least give a general idea, what you are looking for or what interest you have, there will be someone who is helpful to point you in the right direction. But it works better if these people at least know what you have seen and what you liked/disliked. So move it and put some work into it.

It's hard to care about characters when they aren't believable people.

In that case I still have a lot of shows to watch. I've apparently only seen 118 shows.
