You know what would be helpful? A complete list of what you already watched and what you liked/disliked. I just went to your MAL and its a joke. There is no way of telling, what sort of anime you want. And instead of ranting about an anime you didn't like, because you only look after ratings how about looking around what thematics etc. you are interested in and then looking for some anime in that direction.
Even if you like a particular genre and you are watching an anime with a high rating, this is no guarantee that you will like it too. There can be single elements (main character, animation, etc.) which will make it not possible for you to enjoy an anime. So at least look for summaries and ask for some details (closed storyline, open ending).

Yes this means you will have to invest some time for your entertainment, no mindless watching and letting others take the decision for you, what you will be watching. Sure high/low ratings are a nice indicator about the overall quality (or about the fans) of an anime, but everyone has a personal taste and opinion about such things.

Take a look around the "Recommendations" here in this forum, if you at least give a general idea, what you are looking for or what interest you have, there will be someone who is helpful to point you in the right direction. But it works better if these people at least know what you have seen and what you liked/disliked. So move it and put some work into it.

This, however, is something I cannot agree with no matter what.
You obviously didn't understand the core issues of the main characters and where their personality lies. And calling Rivaille (Levi) a jerk/prick proves my point. You clearly didn't watch the show carefully enough.
It's hard to care about characters when they aren't believable people.

In that case I still have a lot of shows to watch. I've apparently only seen 118 shows.

Actually I'll leave this here too. Just stumbled upon it.

To each their own I guess? Though it sounds like you just don't like series with great storytelling, fantastic characters and gorgeous battle scenes. And epic moments almost every episode.

I'm probably not one to speak, because I absolutely detested some of the most popular series out there (Clannad, Baccano, Higurashi) but the reasons you give for disliking the series so much boggles the mind. Like, how is Levi a prick? He's a badass man who hates the titans and has the utmost respect for his fellow soldiers. Did you fall asleep during that scene where the soldier died and he grabbed his bloody hand, even though he's OCD? I don't know a single person who didn't love that moment.

Maybe you need to try something else. Try Basilisk. Or Shikabane Hime.

I agree with most of that (except the term 'brilliant', sure, it was good, but slow and well, decent.).
But it still doesn't change the fact I don't like the characters (other than Levi) and that the OST was medicore.

and yeah LeijonaSisu you ought to make full anime list, and take a note of the genre you like, would you like the series you watch to be FINISHED, there is certain annoyance to the series that stop in the middle (I'm looking at you, Skip Beat!). and do you like the series to go forward with good speed and not be stuck in one place for 3-20 episodes. (I'm looking at you, shounen!)

Skipping what others have posted, I will reply directly to your post, OP.

First off, you watched Attack on Titan with the completely wrong mindset. To a higher extreme, watching Attack on Titan for the action is like watching hentai for the plot. Attack on Titan was meant to be a story. It tries to throw the weight of the situation on you, and it excels at doing so. Don't forget that the anime is not over. There is another season coming.

Second, Another was mediocre. Your decision to stop watching anime because a show didn't meet your incorrect expectations is silly.

Third, there are a lot of bad shows out there. You said it yourself - a majority of the shows you watched were "mainstream". Most mainstream shows are overrated and garbage. Take the effort to sift through the bullshit and find a show you actually want to watch. Go into the show only with the expectation that the show is about what the synopsis from MAL or AniDB says it is about.

Find a genre you like and stick to it. Don't force yourself to watch shows that you don't feel in your heart you want to watch. Most importantly make sure you are watching shows for the right reason. They are there to entertain, not to bend to your desires. If you go into every show with expectations you will only be satisfied one in a hundred times.

I've watched probably close to 100 series in my life.
Stopped reading right there. Wow, 100 series. You must be pretty hardcore. And you even admit to mostly watching the popular ones. Go home kid.... you're drunk. Come back when you've matured a little, in the anime viewing department at least. Or, you could just quit. Nobody would care either way. Though that list...

Edit: HAHAHAHA!!!! He gave Naruto a 10/10. Wow... damn... FMA got a 7/10. This kid is HILARIOUS!!

Not what I meant. I meant that 100 series is hardly a lot, especially when it's all very mainstream stuff.

It's not a huge amount by the standards of some people here (on this anime forum with lots of hardcore anime fans), but 100+ series is actually a hell of a lot when you think about it - easily enough to decide if you like anime or not. Insulting him for not watching enough isn't hugely constructive.

^yeah, 100+ series is a lot, but having most of it mainstream (or from that TOP 200 list I've heard of)
pretty much means that his taste in anime is still developing, give the duude time.

on the other note:

TV: 370, OVA: 78, Movies: 45, Spcl.: 34, Eps: 11,906
for me. In the completed section.

Geez, what an incredible amount of serious replies. I practically left this thread for dead after the first 4 posts..
Thanks to the majority for what seems to be some pretty constructive and caring replies. I can't believe how many different opinions everyone has on everything, I guess that's one of the beauty about these sorts of things.

First and foremost I really don't know what genres that I really like because as many of you have said, everything I have watched is starkly different from each other.
In a general sense I guess I could say that I enjoy stuff with an in-depth storyline, a lot of character development and generally usually one main protagonist. Though I have no problem with protagonist/antagonist groups either, I just find that most animes with one clear hero/main character are generally a bit more touched up. Because there's generally a ton of back story on that.

However my all time favourites are: Samurai Champloo, Code Geass, Elfen Lied, Afro Samurai and Fate Stay/Night. As you might have guessed I really generally don't like animes that are any longer than about 50 episodes unless they are AAA+ amazing series. I'd rather watch a few shorter series and enjoy everything that comes with them instead. Having said that 'Attack on Titan' would be an exception if it went on longer and was renewed for another season. Also obviously Naruto is one of my exceptions.

Two of my favourite animes were actually movies for example: Hoshi wo Ou Kodomo and Giniro no Kami no Agito. Both of them were just amazing, and whilst I know some people didn't like the later that much, I actually really enjoyed it. I like a lot of conflict, and generally I also like quite a bit of violence too. If you look at my 'MAL' list I also don't mind nudity at all either. Quality (preferably 720p or Bluray) is also kinda important too, so if the anime is super old and in pretty low quality and I have to watch it in some tiny screen, and not from the comfort of my couch or something then that might put it off too.

Avatar - The Last Airbender is probably my all time favourite. But it's technically a 'cartoon' even though it adopts a lot of things from the sort of anime reference style. It has intense character development, a lot of internal conflict, a lot of shocking situations and revelations. Huge plot twists, quite a bit of violence and turmoil and also a bit of romance and a good measure of sadness thrown in. It'd have to be my all time favourite and the animation style has practically nothing to do with that at all so I think it counts to mention.

On the contrary after reading a lot of these replies I kinda feel like, even though I (personally) have watched a lot of animes and was ready to give up on them. I might have just only sort of scratched the surface and that perhaps it was a tad presumptuous to get all fired up over nothing. In my defence, I guess I was sort of just expecting season one of 'Attack on Titan' to finish off more in a manner like 'Code Geass' with well.. I suppose 'the general plot' still there, but still many more answers tied off and a lot less 'beating around the bush' - Though I see that perhaps that was an unrealistic expectation.  I severely hope that the second season is better, though it's usually safe to say second seasons always are.

I also want to stay that I have watched a lot of stuff that isn't on My Anime List (or no matter how hard I look, I cannot find it).. so I can't add them which is a real shame. But I should use the site more often, I just have to remember a lot of stuff because much of what I watched was a long time ago. Though I did manage to add a few more titles to my list today. It's just hard to remember as I usually delete them after watching and some of the super old stuff I had on VHS and DVD. So don't shoot me for that.

EDIT: This thread can be moved to the Recommendations section if deemed necessary.

Nice comeback. Calming down and reflecting usually makes things a lot nicer.

I've watched over a thousand anime series and films, and I still feel like I've only scratched the surface... 8.67% of anidb. Means that in my lifetime, I'll only be able to get a just reasonable overview of what this amazing medium has to offer

So there, I think I, like many others (probably even you too), have fair reasons for my ratings, when given the chance to explain.
But hey, dat rationale of yours, you sound like you belong on an online game, not an anime forum.. Troll harder please :)

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This next post was a real eye-opener and one of the best I have read in a long time (to be fair most of these have, albeit the troll baiting ones and etc). The last sentence really made me think, and to be honest this should go into some sort of 'Anime/Otaku's guide book' or something :D ...

    (click to show/hide)

To each their own I guess? Though it sounds like you just don't like series with great storytelling, fantastic characters and gorgeous battle scenes. And epic moments almost every episode.

Fair call, but let me just say what about "Characters" and "Plot holes"? By plot holes I mean what I said about leaving certain specific plot details unanswered (in SNK's case, 95% of them).
As many others have said it's incredibly easy to dislike something for one very specific thing that really starts to overshadow everything else. Googling around and seeing no definitive proof that the series will be renewed, with seriously MANY saying that it might not regardless of popularity (we all know that CAN happen). It can be a huge deal-breaker.

Like, how is Levi a prick? He's a badass man who hates the titans and has the utmost respect for his fellow soldiers. Did you fall asleep during that scene where the soldier died and he grabbed his bloody hand, even though he's OCD? I don't know a single person who didn't love that moment.

    Another fair point actually.

Don't get frustrated with negative replies. Some people love to troll even if they have to do it in a hypocrites(spelling help?) way.At least the attack thread wasn't on the front page.

Have you tried Appleseed, Black Lagoon, Rurouni Kenshin: Tsuiokuhen,Gantz (don't expect a conclusion in the anime. The manga is finishes though.), Ghost in the Shell,Vampire Hunter D, Wolf's Rain, Xam'd Lost memories ?
    +FMA, Magi, Basilisk

He was probably just irritated that I insulted one of the Animes he likes, or he was just having a bad night like I was. To be honest I don't care, just felt he wasn't making any valid points. I see he can make mistakes without thinking too though haha. All water under the bridge anyway.

I actually plan to try 'Rurouni Kenshin: Tsuiokuhen' and I have actually read all of the 'Gantz' manga and I really liked it. Enough plot twists and stuff but in that case there wasn't really much character development but that's due to the nature of the story and it didn't really matter due to that. I didn't watch the Anime because as you said it's not completed so I figured what's the point.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I guess after reading many of these replies I've come to realise a lot of things, and one of the biggest definitely is:
Maybe (personally) it's best not to watch Animes that do not have a completed story-arc as generally I guess I do tend to judge a bit heavily on how they end and how much they come full circle (if at all)

So I might just stick to completed Animes in the future and be much more wary of something that isn't finished. In my defense though I actually initially thought that SNK was just 'on-going' for the sake of it. Somewhat how the first series of Naruto was. In that, the general storyline was entirely completed but that they were making more fillers and other stuff to keep the fan-base happy. So that the Anime was actually the entire Manga compacted into 25 episodes. Obviously I was entirely wrong, because by episode 18 I wondered how on earth they were going to explain everything in just a few more episodes.

Browsing around MAL and suddenly a wild 'slightly relevant' hilarious comment appears:

Oh, hmm okay. None of those would have been close in my eyes to your wishlist, but okay.

Monster (is still on your ToWatch-List), one main character, several side-characters, certainly an in-depth storyline and character development, not looking so good on the quality part. You should try it (if you haven't already).

Kemono no Souja Erin, several strong points like Monster, not that much action and animation can be a bit on the poorer side sadly. You should at least watch it to episode 6, if you like it, all the better.

Maybe Space Brothers, try the first three episodes, if it doesn't click, no prob.

Tiger & Bunny, is a little bit more action, less in-depth storyline, still nice character development.

Usagi Drop, because of your movie choices, you will probably like this one.

Maybe Psycho-Pass (would be surprised, if you haven't seen it already)

Take a look at Hyouge Mono, maybe it's your cup of tea ;)

Looking at your movie list, most Ghibli movies, that you haven't watched should interest you.

Take a look at these and give feedback, how close the recommendations were to your taste.

I completely agree with the bolded part. I cannot fault you there. But in terms of "plot holes"... I think all incomplete series suffer from them, because they are exactly that. Incomplete. (Granted, there are plenty of completed series that suffer from the same thing, but I digress). Even in the manga, there are still very few answers to be found. It's still a developing story! Hating on the plot holes just because they are holes doesn't make the story bad. If given the time, we will get the answers. As for your annoyance with the characters, I can't agree with what you said, but I'll point the bolded part and say that I do understand.

All right! Let's see how badly I butchered the quoting. But anyways. I appreciate the well-thought out responses. It's a lot easier to discuss things when people actually attempt to explain why they feel the way they do than saying "It just sucked!" :P

As for recommendations... you like action, blood and nudity is fine. With completed stories. Easy enough.

Katanagatari - A dialogue-heavy, double length episode series... with some incredible action. If you can handle all the talking and power-upping in Naruto, you can handle the dialogue here. It's witty and comical. About a "swordless" swordsman sent out to collect 12 special "swords".
Mnemosyne - Dark and twisted, even moreso than Elfen Lied. Immortal beings, demons, gore, torture. Got it all.
Shinsekai yori - A gorgeous dystopian series where everyone is an esper. Lots of twists and turns, bodies getting blown up... a bit surreal at times. At the moment this is my all-time favorite

Also, to hit on some other things, 100 series really IS a lot of series. But no matter how many you have seen, there are always others out there that you have missed. (I'm at a little over 200 now, and I'm still finding gems!) And Avatar: the Last Airbender? Oh yeah. That really is better than 95% of anime :P
