So I guess this won't get merged or locked? Because the thread already exists.

Actually cry? None.

Made my eyes water to the extent where I could be considered crying? Clannad After Story and AnoHana are the only ones I can think of right now.

This applies to me as well. I have more that are forgettable enough to not remember off the top of my head.

As I said in the original post, I am well aware that there was an old thread about this. The site yelled at me for trying to necro it, so I decided to make a new one with an extra emphasis on finding newer shows that we may have missed and discussing whether or not there has been a lull recently in the drama/tragedy genre, while still focusing on the base topic of which anime has made us cry as a whole. If that is not okay and it needs to be merged, that's fine, but people seem to be liking it so far so hopefully there's not an issue.

Have not really cried but I have on the brink of it with not stuck in my throat that would not go down.

Clannad - Everyone who watched knows why.
and
Chronos Crusade - The ending was so perfect when both of them stayed togheter on the bench.
There are probably more, but these two are that have left the strongest impression in my memory.

I entered anime because of this. I have seen and enjoyed some anime before, some series on TV and some Miyazaki works rented for my kids but until on a depression I had I watched some sad (in my opinion of course) ones I didnt get caught on anime.
The fact is I watched the Kaoru death episode of EVA on a late night show. It shocked me a lot, loooong stil image while Beethoven music playing... well it really impresed me, so i get all the serie and movies at the moment and watched all in a weekend. It was some "devasting" for me, a big slap on my face. End of Evangelion battles with the Bach air playing in a sadistic combat was... I cried there. Dont know how to say it but it make me interested on how anime tells their histories so i went for more and being depressed i go for more sad ones.
Next one was Saikano and cried some more, stupid deaths on stupid situations, like real ones. An imposible love history...
And Finally Fire of the fireflyes. Few "real" movies made me cry like this anime one. So sad, so tender. Its a shame people try to bitch any of the characters and dont realize the fact that all of them are impotent over the situation they are living and just try to survive on a world that collapses over them.
So that three are on top of my "drop tears" list, for their histories and the moment I watched them.
After been "caught" by anime I saw more sad and tear ones like:
- Now and there... (impresive, so real now a day in his message. One can cry only thinking on that, will we ever learn?)
- She and her cat. (simple real live can make you sad and cry easily, right?)
- Wolfs rain.
- Voices of a distant star. (sad love history)

I can second:
- 5cm/ second
- some Aria (I love those slow simple life series)
- Fruits Basket
- Fool Moon wo Sagashite
- Ano Hana
- Haibane Renmei (nobody mentioned this one?)

then there are some just "sad" or depressing ones, but that will be another list.

I think you spelt several of those incorrectly, including what I assume is "grave of the fireflies"

I also don't get what was sad about fruits basket. It was a reverse-harem romance, there was nothing sad about it
I'll do the flipping on webcam so people know it's legit.

Cant believe Samurai X Reflection has not been mentioned, the ending is the only anime that made me tear up a little, I don't know why, maybe because Kenshin has such a long in depth archive regarding his life?.Other sad anime are ClannadAfter Story, Saikano and Haibane Renmei.

^ Pretty much that. I thought it was obvious. And because it was made by many of the same people as Serial Experiments Lain and Texhnolyze, expecting an ordinary relaxing SOL is pointless :P

Sorry for the mispellings, lately it has begin to get worse, brain and hands seems to go on their own. :/
About Fruits Basket, I think its far more than a reverse harem. Maybe because I also read the manga who develop far more the characters, a few series made me read the manga or novels. For me is a sad (maybe very sad) history told with many humor touches, but if you go any little inside their lives then the "curse" is very real.

I only ever got to read to volume 11 or 14 or some such years ago when it was coming out. But I still don't recall what was sad enough to move someone to tears. I guess a re-read/rewatch is in order.

None so far has made tears drop but there are some that came close, like Ano Hana.
