MPC-HC - how toggle external srt subtitles on/off?
« on: April 20, 2014, 10:26:38 AM »
The only subtitles I can find for some movies are complete subtitles rather than forced for non-english parts and I hate watching a movie with subtitles constantly plastered on the screen... In the key settings it says the key for On/Off Subtitle is W but hitting W does absolutely nothing.

If something has them embedded I can just hit Shift+S to turn them off then S again to turn them back on but with external subs (e.g. moviename.avi moviename.srt) I can't figure out how to toggle them on/off...

Right click->subtitles-> uncheck "enable"

W works by the way for me so they might actually be hardsubbed if you can't toggle them.

I was wanting a hotkey, not something that immersion breaking.

I found out that the On/Off hotkey didn't work because for some reason it doesn't work if I'm using VSFilter (auto-loading version). I had to set it to block in external filters then set subtitles to auto-loading under playback. I think I had to do the VSFilter thing for some other problem I was having so I don't know what consequences this is going to have undoing it, but it seems to be the only way to get the hotkey to work.

Yes, it's only working for the internal filter at the moment. The problem is known and will probably be fixed at some point. (It may work in MPC-BE if you want to test that.) The internal subtitle filter is usually regarded as sub-par, though. You may notice slightly different colors and other problems compared to xy-vsfilter or XySubFilter. It can also be slower (that said, the devs have done some work on speeding it up recently).

I find it a bit annoying on the few occasions when both internal and external sub-filters are working and two sets of subtitles being rendered.

Why not just throw away the srt file before you start watching

I would not throw away the external subtitle file if that had the better subtitles that I wanted to see.

I don't know but to me it always seemed multi language movies have burned in subtitles for the non English parts.
So if you do not require subtitles for the English parts just don't use a external subtitle.

Not all subtitles are the same.  Sometime I like the video quality done by one group and the subtitle done by another group.  It is best to keep the original files intact in case you want to seed either the video or subtitle.  Generally, I prefer it when the subtitles are not embedded with the video.  I prefer to collect raws.  I like to keep the different files (video and external subtitles) organized in separate folders and use the video player to select which subtitle to display.
