The first anime I ever saw was Pokemon when I was around 4 or 5 but I didn't start to get interested in anime until I saw Rurouni Kenshin back when I was around 9.

It depends a bit on the definition.. I have vague memories of barbapapa and lots of other cartoons from my early childhood, stuff that's pretty universally kiddie stuff and hard to discern what was produced in what country. Shows blurring the line like Moomin, the 3 Muskethounds, Around the World in 80 Days with Phileas Fogg and so on..

First one I consciously knew as anime was Super-Dimensional Fortress Macross, even though it was the US bastardization Robotech. Aside from the weekend morning cartoon shows, first one on video was either Venus Wars or Akira, or another one of the few english-dubbed anime movies back then.

My first anime was Speed Racer.  I think I was about 5 or 6.  And it was followed by Transformers and Robotech.  It wasn't until I was 8 did I get to watch Akira.  My mother nearly bricked when she watched it with me.  She didn't know what to think of it.  She had never seen a "cartoon" be so bloody or violent before.

I really got into anime after that, but living where I live it was hard to even get the normal dubbed versions of anime that played on the weekends.  It wasn't until '93-'94 when Sci-Fi started to play anime on Saturday mornings that I was able to get ahold of some really good anime titles.  Like Battle Angel, GITS, Bubblegum Crisis, Appleseed (1987), Dominion Tank Police, Gall Force, and so on.  I think they even played Bastard! before it was pulled from the air.

Makes me wish that Anime Launch hadn't been pulled from one of the cable carriers around here.  They would show most of the kiddy stuff between 6am-4pm and then start up with the teen stuff.  It was from 10pm-5am that all the really bloody, sex filled and gruesome anime would be played.  It also would sub them and let the regular dialog play.  It was amazing.  To bad it got pulled after a few months.   :'(

Excluding Pokemon, Digimon and DBZ (omg it rules). The first one I watched was the entire series of "Ah! My Goddess" Closely followed by "Galaxy Angel". Wow. What combo.

Urusei yatsura, waaaaaaay back in the day.  Way.

Does Voltron count?  I watched both of those when I was living in the Philippines in the early-mid 80s.

Ninja Scroll (subbed) was my first true manga.  I don't consider the shows that were on t.v. in my answer.  I still love watch'n Ninja Scroll even though I've watch'd it 100's of times.  Back when I was too young to afford cable, the good ol vcr was all i had.  ;D

Ninja Senshi Tobikage (Ninja Robots), Cartoon Network. 10 years ago, at the age of 8. English dub. Followed by Speed Racer, then DragonballZ. Got hooked on to anime about two years ago, when unlimited bandwith was finally availible in this country.

Anyone aware if Ninja Senshi Tobikage is availible anywhere, subbed, on DVD? I doubt it's ripped as it's very old, but I wouldn't mind buying it. It's out of stock in the few places I managed to find it. >_<

The first anime I ever saw was definitely Sailor Moon, my sister used to make me watch it,
me too :) ... although no one made me watch it. I still have around 30 or so episodes to watch and then I'd have gone through all 200 :D

As so many others, I have to say that I exclude Pokemon, as it's like what everyone's first anime was.

My first anime after Pokemon was actually You're Under Arrest, a quite interesting anime that I still like today. :) Also, I can recall that thing called "Moomin." Long time ago.
