Yeah..."mum" really does suit the English, although they probably could pull of a "mom" every now and then. Sadly, it doesn't work that way for us Americans.
I totally understand what you mean, though. I absolutely
hated it when my friends in India (when I was living there) would start using "western" words to sound cool and totally butchering them, thus making me one angry-as-fuck panda. I was pissed off at them because:
1) They're neglecting their own culture.
- Yes, I'm brown, but I'm only racially Indian. Culturally- not one bit.
2) They're making MY culture and words sound like shit.
For example, they try to use the word "dude" and it sounds like "dooodh" (the ds are pronounced like the "th" in
the). Sounds ugly as shit. I think you can guess how badly they fucked up the others.
It's hilarious how so many people absolutely hate Americans, yet they end up imitating us anyway :s Makes me sorta proud yet disgusted.
