I remember my mom telling me once that you want your kids to fear you not respect you.  I would have to say I agree with that.

Edited for truth....my father lives by this (at least when i was smaller the he was...now its different...kinda ::) )

Something along the lines of "let he without sin cast the first stone" I would guess.

I got the end of a plastic flyswatter.  And yes the swatter part was cut off so it was basically a plastic stick.  My mom said they tried to find something that would cause a lot of pain without bruising or breaking bones.  Holy shit those things hurt.  I would have begged for a wooden spoon instead.

yea...but imagine getting a wooden spoon on your hands...that shit hurt

and when my older brorthers were little and if they fucked up in class the TEACHER would use a ruler and hit all the finger tips at once (bring all finger tips to one point....like a pyramid)...(try it gently and see how much it hurts)

I got mine on bare ass.  It stung.

I use a wooden spoon, paint stirring stick, or a rubber spatula.  They hurt just enough to get the point across.

I'm not sure if my parents ever had to actually use the wooden spoon. They used their hands, or if we were really bad, the belt. The wooden spoon was like the the ultimate punishment though, we feared it so much that I don't think they ever even had to use it.

The school I went to in Grade 1->3 was like that too. My older brother got the ruler once or twice. =p

Well, after Grade 3 I switched to a different school. I'm not sure up to what grade they did the ruler thing.

I feered the fly swapper as a kid!!! that thing stung.Oh and i am still ignoring the kid after more then 24 hours. i have not said a word to him or even cooked for him. He burned himself making lunch. He tried to show me but i pretended he was not there. Did i mention he has ADHD? I still think it's no excuse for getting in the trouble he gets.

Sometimes tough love is the best love.  You just have to do whatever it takes sometimes.  ADHD doesn't make a kid a bad one, but it can make them a lot more difficult to deal with.  I know a lady in San Francisco who works with ADD and ADHD kids and their families.

My brother was/is ADHD. Back then they just assumed that someone with it was just a "bad child", now they diagnose it as a condition.
I'm not even going to pretend I know a thing about parenting, but shouldn't you at least still show him that you love him? I mean, don't cook for him, don't do him any favors, all that jazz, but don't make him think that you're on the brink of disowning him. I think that'd just make him lash out more in the end. But again, like I said, I'm not even gonna pretend I know what I'm talking about (just throwing it out there).
