What speeds are written in your contract with the ISP? ISP average does not really mean anything if the ISP offers more than one plan/speed. For example, my speed is probably 10 times the ISP average, but I am using the fastest (and most expensive) plan they provide.

Well, I tried running the speed test on my router (Celeron 1GHz) and even with not optimized TCP stack and the CPU intensive test app it still managed to get 20mbps down and 50mbps up, so your 1.7GHz should get more than that. Though when it just acts like a router, it passes more bandwidth because the flash test app uses a lot of CPU.

And no matter who actually pays for the connection, you should know what you should be getting. Also, if your connection is DSL, thecable between you and the ISP may be bad (happened to me once), then your modem won't be able to work at maximum speed.

That's ... painful to watch somebody with such a connection... yet alone have such a connection. If I could I'd donate some of my bandwidth/speed.

Its wireless only internet that I have to log into. Which sucks. And means I can't connect both my macs at the same time or even use my PS3 with it. :/

It's highly unlikely your problem is client side, unless it's a software issue.

In 2001 I was able to get 10MB/s up and down on my old 700Mhz Pentium 3 laptop when transferring files between computers on the school's network.

Like he said it's highly unlikely that it's a client sided problem. Even slow computers can have high internet speeds. Either your router is capped at a lower speed you get or your NIC (network interface controller) is so old it can't handle your speed. But I highly doubt it's one of the latter 2 cases.

Run a less graphical test instead of speedtest.net, the flash might be hurting your slow computer.

I can use torrents fine, the downloading bit anyways. And I seed off my dedi, so no trouble at all. But yes, ports are blocked.

Running torrents off that connection would be orgasmic.

I'm EXTREMELY satisfied with my new ISP.

I paid for a 10/1 connection, and to my surprise after they installed yesterday...
