I wonder where the practice to call transfer caps "bandwidth" came from.

That is interesting to me too. AFAIK, the correct terms should be speed (latency), capacity (bits per second) and monthly traffic (GB/month).

Hm, it would be better if the upload were like the download. I hope that we get FTTH in the next 2 years here.
But only 20 Euros for that speed isn't bad.

Now if they would up the upload to 70 I'd be happy.

But for Canada speeds like that is wayyyy beyond the average.

I wish to upgrade to fiber from cable. ^^ (They upped speeds from 25/10 to 100/10 recently on this cable connection. Now if I could only get those speeds outside of the nordic countries. Sucks when I upload at 100 since nobody near me is on the torrents.)

Oh and nice necro, I hadn't posted in this thread.

My ISP announced that it will be increasing speeds to 300mbps up/down to everywhere (currently I have 200 to Lithuania and 80 to other countries) and I will actually pay less than I do now (22.8EUR/month instead of 28.6EUR/month).

My router does not have enough power to do this, so I will have to buy a used server for routing. Then I will see if my torrent server has enough power to upload at 30MB/s.

The change is supposed to happen on the 16th of this month. I hopw I will be ready with my new-to-me hardware

The ISP finally replaced the fiber-to-1000BaseT converter and now I can get the new speed:

JESUS FUCKING CHRIST ARE YOU HARDWIRED TO THE DAMN ISP ITSELF?!?!!

Ironically, I just finished helping my mom set up a new internet plan. Going to be getting around 40mbps up and down (or at least, I'm SUPPOSED to, meaning I'll more realistically getting aroudn 30 up and down)

JESUS FUCKING CHRIST ARE YOU HARDWIRED TO THE DAMN ISP ITSELF?!?!!

Pretty much, I mean there is a fiber optic cable going all the way from the ISP to a converter in my house, then a UTP cable going from the converter to my router PC, which is connected to a switch where all my other PCs are connected to.

I will also pay less than I did before. Yes, the ISP upgraded the speeds but kept the prices constant and in some cases lowering them.

I live in Kaunas, Lithuania. The ISP is TEO LT, the land line phone company.

eastern telecom and got a 2mbps/700kbps but speedtest mostly says its 200kbps/600kbps, some times it says the correct 2mbps/700mbps. fraud? or its getting capped on a certain time?

and this ****ing line costs me 50$ worth a month. its supposed to be a 25$ a month line but because i`m trashing the 20gb limit they charge me the extra gb i use.

PS: a 10mbps line costs 200$ a month.

Speedtest tests the actual speed (downloads/uploads a file and times how long it took). Your ISP probably promised an "up to" speed, so it may be lower when the network is congested. For a slow connection other things should not affect the reading.

For a fast connection, like mine, the browser, the speed of the PC and the load of the test server may affect the reading quite a lot. Also, for a fast connection, the download/upload file size is a bit too small. Ideally, Speedtest should not transfer a fixed amount of data and time how long it took, but transfer data for, say, 10 seconds and see how much it transferred (iperf bandwidth test program works this way) because TCP connections may be a bit slow in the beginning.

They get a fine if they market up to speeds and then can't deliver that up to speed here. ^^ As well as getting ridiculed in the news papers. Wasn't that way ~7 years ago though, so if people pressure them it can change.

Do they limit speeds when you leave the ISP? Regional speeds?

Was 40, not 2. http://www.aftonbladet.se/pryl/dator/article551799.ab summary, her son did it as a show of concept. She didn't even own a computer prior to that.
