Well, I've caped my ftp upload speed to about 18KB/s so that it wont slow down my internet connection. My max up is only like 50KB/s.
So I'm just saying it's going to take me awhile. I don't mind if you post me the episode numbers that you would want now though.

Another tool that I found really helpful is this: http://guidetojapanese.org/ It is the best grammar guide I've seen so far. I know a lot of people shun grammar, but to me it's really helpful, plus with this guide i actually felt like I was learning something rather than make my brain fry.

I'm sorry if someone has already mentioned this, but since I only had the patience to read the first five pages or so of this thread, I hope you'll forgive me.

I just wanted to remind anyone who is trying to learn Japanese that learning it directly from anime (as was suggested a few times) and only in that way would not be a really great idea for those who actually wish to go to the country at any point and seriously converse.  Most of the phrasing in anime is terribly impolite, and I hate to admit that I made the mistake of trying this tactic when I took my college Japanese courses.

Needless to say, my attempts at communicating with my teacher as a result of this training ended disastrously and left her very much offended.  Luckily, that made her redouble her efforts to make sure that we, as a class, learned all of the different levels of communication that went with levels of respect.  So just to repeat my point, please use another learning tool besides anime, and try to only use anime to keep the language fresh in your mind once you have gained a reputable knowledge of the proper grammar and vocab.

Personally, I used the Nakama texts, as my teacher was fairly old-fashioned.  If anyone has a Nintendo DS, the "My Japanese Coach" software is pretty good.  It starts you off with romaji (which I never learned, but apparently is easier to start with to some people who are afraid of kana right away), and then works in kana and even some kanji later.  I thought it was great, since it employed games, and had reading, writing, AND speaking involved in it.

I mean no disrespect to people who haven't had the chance to learn Japanese via the classroom, and have therefore taught themselves through anime and whatnot... I just wanted to make sure that those who wished to use it for travel purposes and things like that didn't end up embarrassing themselves by running up to random Japanese people and spouting incredibly disrespectful phrases.

Nakama FTW. Same texts my Japanese teacher is using. The sad part is that I don't need a lot of credits to earn my Japanese minor in college, so I have to pick a route of classes that I want to specialize in. I can go further into speaking and listening to the language, further into the business/professional end of the language, or further into reading, writing, and calligraphy of kana. I want all of those skills :P

Really? I planned on calling all women obaasan and men ero-jiji and using Dirty Japanese as my bible. I probably wouldn't go that far, but I would definitely want to have some fun if I can get away with it. This site has a few gems, http://koukeisha.net/nihongo-bin/dirty.htm:

I also own two volumes of Making Out in Japanese.  They follow about the same lines as that website, and I have used them many times to offend my Japanese friends.

Hi!

I've been watching anime and listening to Japanese music (I love it) for almost a year now. I want to start learning Japanese but my collage (fuck them) only has English, Portuguese and French. For the moment I don't have much time or money to take a course somewhere, so I was thinking if I could learn a little on my own. I'm more interested in reading, writing and listening, Japanese music is all I listen these days. I don't care much about speaking or the business/professional end, I won't go to Japan anytime soon. I saw lots of links in this thread but is there any e-book you can download for starters (starting with romaji if possible)? I'd like something like that instead of videos and audios, it would be great if I can have it to read while I'm not home, I spend a lot of time out. If not, it can be one of those websites but I'll have to wait to be in college where they have wifi.

Thanks :)

As I have plans to go to Japan, I'm learning the language through textbooks. I'd also need to practice speaking besides writing and reading.

Sure thing, I'll start uploading them tomorrow when i have a moment to do so.

Everyone feel free to pester me on this so that i wont forget.  :P So far I only have up to ep 40 of Irasshai I
I'll start upping Irasshai II now since thats what more people seem to be interested in.

UPDATE  Aug-18-2009:
I have ep 1-40 of Irasshai I and 1-20 of Irasshai II. However according to my web logs, only one video has been downloaded in the whole time I've been doing this.
So anyways, I'm going to put this on hold for awhile unless people start bugging me about it. No one is downloading so I don't really see the point in wasting my breath.

UPDATE2:
OK, people are DLing now. I'll up some more  ;)

This thread tl;dr, but if you're willing to buy study materials, I've used [THIS] [THIS] and [THIS] as a book set and it's done well. After you complete these books you could either enroll in a real class or move on to Minna no Nihongo, which I hear is a really great book for intermediate level speakers (the book is completely in Japanese, but there are translation notes you can get to help you understand it more if you aren't 100% up to par).

I've been trying to learn Japanese through Pimslers Japanese lessons, however, you quickly get bored by doing that, first couple of lessons are funny though, it would be easier if you were learning it in a class.

Ah yeah, I see what the problem is. Give me a few hours and I'll re-upload it. I'll edit this post with a status once I'm finished.

UPDATE:
OK, ep2 is re-uped. And all of "Irasshai I" is uploaded too. Let me know if any other links fail.

Thank you very much!

Irasshai II ep 20 doesn't start either.
[also will be happy if you continue to upload it too]

Sure thing, I'll re-up the vid when i have a moment, though my bandwidth is being taken up my torrenting right now. I'll get around to uploading the rest of Irasshai in a few days  and I'll post again when I do  ;)

Oh, and feel free to keep bugging if any more of the files fail.

No problem, though you'll have to wait a bit. I'll get to it as soon as I can and I'll also upload the rest of the vids. Thanks for letting me know.
