I saw the first ten minutes of the first Pretty Sammy episode years ago and I still haven't got over the trauma it caused...

Honestly, it almost ruined the whole magical girl category for me. It took some seriously good series before I could look at those words once more and not have to relive the abominable moments of Pretty Sammy in my mind again.

Cardcaptor Sakura

I've been wondering about Cardcaptor Sakura. I've been interested in seeing it, but it's run on TV and from the commercials seemed to be more of a pokemon type show geared toward kiddies. Would I be right in my assumtion that it's more of a kids show? Or is it like other animes where the dubbed version was changed into a kids show, but the original is more adult.

It has both approaches. It is a kids show with some deeper themes thrown into the background. Kids won't notice them but it keeps the interest up for the adults. The first half is more for kids than the second one if I recall correctly.

Especially the movies have a more mature feeling to them.

I've been wondering about Cardcaptor Sakura. I've been interested in seeing it, but its run on TV and from the commercials seemed to be more of a pokemon type show geared toward kiddies. The dubbed version called "Cardcaptors" was changed quite a bit from the original, but the original is still a kids' series meant for young Japanese girls. But as we all know, what's acceptable for kids in Japan vs. the US can be a world of difference. That said, I wouldn't call it a pokemon type of series -- it's not directly intended to market a card game. I found it to be a very cute series that mixed action/battles with Clow Cards in with comedy and romance, all with the "Magical Girl" setup. Sometimes it is "Card of the Week," but CCS doesn't suffer from the recycled animation sequences as much as Sailor Moon and other similar series. And for a late 1990s series, it still looks pretty good. If you DL the version that's on Box, you'll get the uncut version that was released on DVD, so no need to worry about the edited TV-version.
