Title: Design new Category icons competition
Post by: Duki3003 on January 26, 2016, 11:31:19 am
As the topic title states, it's about time for us to update our old Category icons to better match the rest of the site, and since BakaBT has quite a few creative users we think a little competition might spice things up a bit...

Some requirements:
- Icons have to be scalable, so please submit them in SVG format
- Have to match our overall theme
- Do not borrow assets from other websites, i.e other torrent tracker category icons.

Feel free to submit multiple variants, in monochrome or in coloured style.

Categories in question:
Anime Series,    OVA,    Soundtrack,    Manga,    Anime Movie,    Live Action,    Artbook,    Music Video,    Light Novel
and their H counterparts.

Also additional bonus points for anyone that finds/makes a slick replacement metro black icon for Lossless tag. They too have to be highly scalable SVG format, so it looks good for both small (8x8px) and large (32x32px) dimensions. Carks is also pestering me for a better HD variant that scales better for (8x8px) - that one is optional.

Winner will receive 32000 bonus points, and if he/she chooses to share their contact information, some BakaBT Merchandise from our Web-shop. (Choice between our Mousepad or a BakaBT mug).
We will be accepting submissions until the end of February.

Are you sure you need Hentai Soundtrack and Hentai Live Action :)? Besides, I suspect that Hentai Anime Series and Hentai Anime Movie will be HEAVILY underused :P.

We actually have both of those, I uploaded one of the rare H soundtrack myself, lol. Only thing missing from the H scene is a music video.
Not that that will be a case forever tho, because you know... Japan...

H-Live actions - https://bakabt.me/browse.php?only=1&hentai=1&c6=1&reorder=1&q=
H-Soundtracks - https://bakabt.me/browse.php?only=1&hentai=1&c3=1&reorder=1&q=
H-Anime Movies - https://bakabt.me/browse.php?only=1&hentai=1&c5=1&reorder=1&q=
H-Anime Series is the only one that doesn't exist, and probably never will - so yeah, that one _can_ be skipped

Sure they're not highly populated categories, but they exist, so having an icon to differentiate it is not unheard of.

On a serious note, Parade Parade OST is indeed relatively good.

Nice idea. Looking forward to see the different styles. We have had the current icons for how long? :p

Oh nice. A light novel icon finally.  ;D  Does that mean the "Light Novel" keyword will be put  to rest?

H-Soundtracks - https://bakabt.me/browse.php?only=1&hentai=1&c3=1&reorder=1&q=
Just wondering... should I add hentai tag to this my torrent (https://bakabt.me/torrent/154558/pink-pineapple-song-collection)?  ???

How about a custom member title on the tracker for prize?

Manga:

I'd say try and make the other ones in the same style as this one.

And one icon for Visual Novel Category, when we decide to finally allow them. :)

Not out of the question, custom title can be arranged if it's desired.

And one icon for Visual Novel Category, when we decide to finally allow them. :)

Highly unlikely.

Time to put inkscape to use. Amy recommended size, I don't really use SVG much.

umm.. im currently designing some category icons.. but i was wondering what is the meaning of SVG format?
Title: Re: Design new Category icons competition

SVG is a vector graphics format which uses XML and a system of coordinates (and text and other things) to create an image, rather than pixels on a bitmap.

What are the dimensions of the icons? Do they need to be in a 1:1, 4:3, 16:9 ratio or are we free to make choose our own ratio?

EDIT: Also, where are all the creative minds? Hibernating in this cold?
Title: Re: Design new Category icons competition
Post by: Duki3003 on January 29, 2016, 07:04:05 pm
To be honest, we haven't quite decided on ratio.
I don't think we'll be modifying the current layout too much, so we may keep the current ratio (65x37px), but offering a few ratios in your submission will leave us room to experiment with the layout.

My excuse is called The Division and Rise of the Tomb Raider, and a renewed interest in Bloodborne. I'll try and see if I can't come up with some suggestions at the very least to get the ball rolling. :)

And real life responsibilities, surprisingly. I have some ideas, but my lack of skill with computer graphics is a problem. Not to mention, RL stuff right now is at a very important point.

I would actually like to request a extension of deadline ~onegaii.

Well, they may do it anyway since the submissions are scarce.

There are no submissions though, there is one half submission.

Its the start of the year, free time is scarce and the little time we do get is usually spent playing games

I'm still interested, but I'm having trouble coming up with ideas. I really don't give a shit about the bonus points, I just want to see updated icons. Naturally, it is easier to want, than create.
I've never been good with design.
Title: Re: Design new Category icons competition

We can extend the deadline for submissions, I felt that mid February would be enough, however if there is need we can extend it until end of the month.

Good design takes time, so don't be impatient. There is plenty of time still, I expect to see some great submissions.

I'm actually working on this. However, I'm not good at Photoshop and I ended up using AutoCAD

Don't worry. I won't submit a CAD file. Made my idea already. Just having trouble with color and render because we're not on that topic yet.

Not much of a response, so I'll give it a go.
Lossless and HD tags will work fine in SVG, but I could do the other icons much better as an array of PNGs (i.e. ICO-esque). If you know the various sizes you'll need, I think that'd look better. Just let me know either way.
Could you describe the 'overall theme'?
Do you want each icon to be fairly unique, or would you prefer some consistency between them? e.g. could series/movie/OVA have the same icon, with just distinguishing text?
Let me know if there's anything here you like, and I'll work from there.

The manga one is pretty nice in my opinion, what I don't like is the font combination you used. I don't know if it's the shadow, or if it's the color fill (or well the font itself) but I feel like it doesn't look so good. My recommendation is try using other combinations, and fonts if needed.

Also, the icon for the video part (anime, live-action, etc) is kinda "meh", it feels like it doesn't really fit the site.

And no novel icon?  ;)

There's other colour combinations in the top left of that image, do you prefer any of them? I suppose it's hard to tell with them so small and by themselves. I wanted to stick with Joyful Juliana font, but I'll try out some others too.
Yeah I don't like the video one either. I wanted to change it up from the old images, but I might just go back to a film strip after all.
I'll get to the novel soon :P Just trying to get a theme decided at the moment.

Maybe bold white + black stroke? That one looks that it could work.

Any of these good? I feel like it needs a bit of colour, I'm just having a hard time incorporating any.

OK, so these have the same shadows. Two attempts to add some colour. Either any good?
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/156186626/test.png

I agree the shadows look good, but I'm new to vector imaging, I doubt I'd be able to replicate shadows in an SVG (well, at least).

edit: 3am. I'll take a look at all this again after I sleep.

I think the best one out of these is the one in 2nd row without the heart, though I know the theme sort of restricts the allowed range of the colours, but I think you'd get the best contrast with either a luminescent blue or green. Having black bold text with a white stroke would be a bit too bland (as is also the case in the first one with the white text)... You could try filling the panels in the paper with some ink (either some make-believe drawings or just ink splatters) or add a nib pen on the side as a decoration. It just feels like there's something missing and I can't quite seem to grasp what it might be.

Post by: carks on February 03, 2016, 06:23:36 pm
The 2nd one is the best out of that lot in my opinion. Though, as Heike said, the hentai one doesn't look good. Probably because of the colors. I think they don't clash too well.

Personally, I think these:
Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.
However, I think the ink splatters should be black (since manga is mostly b&w) and for the sake of applying a splatter you did it sort of one inside and one outside, it does not give the impression that it's on the paper (well it works out artistically I guess). If you got some time on your hands you could try playing with the other ideas I've layed out for it. (In case you think that laying out make-believe drawings is hard, it's not, just find any stock background (make sure it's free to use of course), be it of a city or something else, turn it into b&w and paste it onto one of the panels on the paper, that way it should give the whole image some more depth. Hope that helps somewhat.

you also should keep in mind that our current icons are around 65x37px in size. we might change the size, though there is not much leeway to make the icons too much larger without wasting space. at the moment your icons are very detailed and don't work too well in smaller sizes. just as an example using your icons with our current design. the text is barely readable. the splotches and all the nice details are barely visible.

Put details in and scaled to an appropriate size. I'm really not convinced it's an improvement over the current icons though.

I'll try to remake as vector images later.

Anoo~, can anyone give some kinda torrent/website/treasure box of nice sans serif fonts which are free (or whatever can be used for logos ~desu). Too many fonts on website to settle on one, damnit.

EDIT: And does it have to be a free font, or can we torrent that too? :P

Most of the fonts are paid ones, especially for commercial use (and most of the time not on dafont or fonts website where you can get it for free). Of course, you could torrent those and use it, but would that be allowed?

Of course, there is Helvetica as a last resort. >_<
Title: Re: Design new Category icons competition
Post by: Krudda on February 05, 2016, 06:34:12 am
Actually dafont hosts mostly free for personal use, commercial is where its almost all paid. It depends on what sort of font you're after and what you're using it for. A category logo for BakaBT would fall under personal use, though direct relation to unlicensed torrenting would make it illegal no matter what the font is.
Just use whatever looks good.

You should include the font file in the directory, as well as a reference to it in the SVG. Otherwise only people who happen to have that font installed will see it correctly.
;)

SVG fonts on MDN (https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/SVG/Tutorial/SVG_fonts)

Hint:
Code: [Select]
<style type="text/css">
  @font-face {
    font-family: "Joyful Juliana";
    src: url(./filename.ttf);
  }
</style>
Add the above code to your SVG file (somewhere above the text elements should be fine) after adding the font file to dropbox.
the `./filename.ttf` references a file "filename.ttf" in the directory where the SVG is located (denoted by the `./`). So change "filename.ttf" to whatever your filename is.

Thanks, can try to strengthen them a bit.
I had another thought to make a character for each category based on those cute little blobs on the background of the site (excuse my ignorance of their provenance).

I can give them different eyebrows and whiskers and other identifying features for differentiation. I'd like to know what you guys think for that to be the theme. Obviously there would be text with them too. I'm pretty happy with the colours that trusty Illustrator and I managed to pull out, they could work for other designs so feel free to pillage.

Now excuse my overly wordy post as it is fast approaching too late to be awake - a common theme of these community exercises methinks.
Look forward to feedback

Holy f****k. They are quite similar to the mess I was designing. They are pretty cool and would really match the new theme of the tracker. But you will have to play with the colors a bit more.

Of course, for hentai, there is the black/red color theme and you have yourself a pretty darn good icon set. I think they look more pro without the dango addition which you were planning IMO :)

I like these. They add something new that my designs didn't have. As long as the text is nice and legible, I don't think the icons really need reflect the categories; though perhaps they could morph to mimic their categories slightly?
Also, as Mistgun_Zero said, I think the H/non-H should have some sort of colour theme (Pinks/Blues, for example).

fyi, the blobs are dango from CLANNAD.

Take a look: https://www.dropbox.com/s/knjvdvuky4r2zhy/Screen%20Shot%202016-02-07%20at%203.22.38%20AM.png?dl=0
fyi, the blobs are dango from CLANNAD.

tl;dr please give feedback, current icons are cool, new icons should be free form like the old ones

In my opinion the current icons are excellent, they would just need to be vectorised.

I tried it it a go myself and while I like the icons on their own, I'm not sure I like it when they are displayed on the page as they don't really fit the design. What I learned from this is that free form icons (like the ones we have now) work the best for the current design of the site instead of rectangular ones.

Nonetheless, I'll post my stuff and explain a little bit about them. Instead of going for an icon that displays the content i.e. a TV = series, CD = audio I instead tried to focus on colours only to represent each category as well text. The problem is I'm way too limited as I like uniformity and I like straight lines...a lot, which I believe isn't a good approach to the problem as I said above about free form icons.

Here's what I came up with. Unfortunately hentai has only one colour and it solely relies on text to distinguish categories.

I can see this going two ways. Either scrap the whole thing or I would need to figure out something to put into the space above the text on each, something that represent the category and can be instantly recognised. I thought about keeping the greyscale design, but instead of using one large image (http://imgur.com/77mXF8N) I should try to use a different manga character for each category. If someone has any ideas, let me know.

I also gave some thought to the lossless icon issue because the Sun icon we have doesn't mean a thing. We are speaking of lossless audio so I thought either a speaker or a microphone would be a better visual representation, so I changed it to a microphone in the preview picture below.

Here's the preview picture

^ While it is very well done, there is just nothing in the artwork above the text that indicates anything related to the category.

On another note, I like the mic icon, make one for speaker as well. That would be nice to see as well. Or a record.

While you're at it make the icons links that filter the torrents by their category.

So is it still ok to make submission?

We will be accepting submissions until February 15th.

Seeing as submissions are really scarce, and only a couple are actually complete, I guess we'll extend the deadline until the end of February. While a few entries so fer are quite promising, we were hoping for a higher turnout.
Hopefully that will be plenty of time for everyone to complete their submission and perhaps a few more other to enter.

So, I made some stuff:

(Ok, I was lazy and just uploaded everything and every version to the folder on db. I really don't know how to sort that out since I don't really use it).

EDIT:

PNG: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/rhc2bqmwetb6ar9/AABTz-zuvnacBu0XO7V1kwcBa?dl=0

SVG: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/441by2d5toz1jmc/AAAVbI-zhtSnNSp5_aXYBZCOa?dl=0

Some Icons are with stroke and some without, some with different heart styles. Go through it and tell me what is good and what sucks and I will see what I can change.....or just outright scrap the whole thing....and probably give up.

Nice work!
Although, I didn't like the font you used
It just doesn't feel like it matches the site.

The site has changed to more of a flat design, along with 'modern' font. The font was chosen to reflect that. It doesnt match the old style, but I think it suit the newer flat look of bbt. Of course if mods want something different sure.

I don't see Century Gothic as 'modern', sadly. The icons look good, but the font make it horribly. It doesn't fit, at all.

The fonts aren't really Century Gothic, even though they damn seem like one. But oh well, I will change it then. Any recs for which one you guys would like? I still suck at typography, ~sigh.

EDIT: Ok, before I start editing, what about the hearts, should I go with Single Heart or Double Hearts art-style? (or the hand drawn style)

I tried new fonts. Haven't done the whole set, but have a look and see if it's ok. Also, for hentai, which color do you guys prefer, red, pale pink, dark pink?

And different fonts:  https://www.dropbox.com/sh/16rinfu41e3l7g6/AABlFyvjc0htXEF0CwMe-RrHa?dl=0  When you can't decide....

EDIT: I will upload SVGs when I can finalize which version to go with

See, this looks better. I like Nirmala the most in the second pack. Now, I have a problem wtih your color choice. The RGB look...too vibrant for me, and it looks bad. You should pick lighter versions of colors like what you chose for Movie. But that's my opinion.

Not much competition these days huh. I wish I knew how to make anything, but too bad I can't.

Come on guys! Uncle Zaraki will help you to fix your ratio if you make a submission!
